Policy 4310 – General Attendance

(Adopted – August 21, 2024)

Regular attendance is essential in providing District students with a high quality of instruction.
Unless otherwise permitted by District Policy or approved by District administration (such as
leave under FMLA, ADA, workers compensation), when employees are absent more than 5 days
in any month, more than IO days in any semester, or more than 15 days per school year, their
absence is considered excessive. This is true regardless of the number of leave days the
employee has available to him or her. The Superintendent/designee will review each incident of
excessive absences and may require the employee to provide medical documentation or may
consider disciplinary actions up to and including termination.

Leave

Eligible full-time certificated staff and support staff are eligible to receive 10 days of leave per
school year. Part-time certificated staff and support staff are eligible to receive a pro-rata number
of these 10 days. Twelve-month employees are eligible to receive 12 days of leave per school
year.

Leave days will be earned on a pro-rated basis predicated on the number of days the employee
has worked. For example, if an employee leaves the District after working only one-half of the
school year, the employee has only accrued only one-half of these leave days.

These leave days can be used for any purpose, including but not limited to sick days, personal
days, vacation, and bereavement leave. Leave days are to be taken in half-day (up to 4 hours) or
full-day (over 4 hours) increments.

The leave days from a given school year must be used first before accumulated but unused days
from prior school years can be used.

Accrued but unused leave days will roll over to subsequent school years, for a maximum
accumulation of 60 leave days. Days donated to the sick leave pool are considered “used” and
thus not subject to be being accumulated and rolled over.

Accrued but unused leave days are eligible for two different payouts as described below.

Annual Payout – Of the days accrued in a given school year, those leave days that
are accrued in that school year but remain unused at the end of that school year
will be paid at a rate of $100 per remaining full day and $50 per remaining half
day subject to all applicable taxes and other required or agreed upon deductions
and withholdings. Payment will be made in conjunction with the employee’s final
paycheck for that school year. Employees who are terminated are not eligible for
this benefit. Contractual employees who do not complete their contract for that school year are not eligible for this benefit. Days donated to the sick leave pool
are considered “used” and therefore not eligible for this pay out.

Retirement Payout – Certified and support staff who retire from the District and
who, as of their retirement date, have accrued but unused leave days from prior
school years will be paid for such remaining days at the rates in the table below
subject to all applicable taxes and other required or agreed upon deductions and
withholdings. The rate paid per day is in accordance with the retiring employee’s
length of service at the District and how much advance written notice the
employee provides the District prior to the date of the employee’s retirement.
Payment will be made in conjunction with the retiring employee’s final paycheck
for that school year. Accrued but unused leave days from the retiring employee’s
current school year will only be paid in accordance with the annual payout section
above.
