Policy 2874 – Administering Opioid Antagonists

NARCAN, also known as naloxone is a medication that can be used to block the effects of opioids.
Properly used, it can be a lifesaver in cases of opioid overdose.

The District shall maintain NARCAN or other opioid antagonist at each school in locked, secure
locations to be administered to any student or staff member reasonably believed to be having a
drug overdose. School nurses and other school personnel expected to provide emergency care in
drug overdose situations shall be trained. The school nurse or other trained school personnel may
utilize the school’s supply ofNARCAN, or similar opioid antagonist to respond to a drug overdose.

The school district will notify the parents/guardians of any student to whom NARCAN or other
opioid antagonist has been administered. Parents who choose not to have an opioid antagonist
administered to their student(s) must notify the district in writing. However, if their student is
reasonably believed to be experiencing a drug overdose, parents will be notified by the school
nurse as expeditiously as possible. In such situations, local medical services will be notified.
